Topic Breakdown
Maintaining good hygiene of your penis is crucial for your overall health, comfort, and confidence. In this video, we're going to cover my top 10 tips on how to keep this area clean and healthy.
The first tip might seem obvious, but it's really important that you wash regularly. I suggest cleaning your penis with warm water daily. If you have a foreskin, gently pull it back and wash underneath. It's crucial to remember that if you have pulled your foreskin back to clean the penis, make sure you pull it back into its normal position once you've finished. Otherwise, you could develop something called paraphimosis. This condition occurs when you can't push the foreskin back into position. This can be problematic for several reasons. First, the retracted foreskin can act like a tight band around the head of the penis, restricting blood flow. This can lead to swelling and pain in the head of the penis, and, ultimately, if it doesn't go back into position, it can impair blood flow to the tip of the penis, which is a medical emergency as it can lead to tissue damage.
Tip number two is to use mild soap when you are cleaning. I recommend choosing a mild, fragrance-free soap to avoid irritation. Harsh soaps and fragrances can cause irritation or allergic reactions. There are many different brands of fragrance-free mild soaps available, so you can easily find one with a quick Google search or by consulting your local pharmacist.
My third tip is related and that's to make sure you thoroughly rinse off any soap or cleanser to prevent irritation to the genitals. Once you've finished washing, tip number four is to dry your genitals thoroughly. After washing, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Remember to use a different towel to dry your body and genitals than the one you use to dry your face. It's really important to dry this area properly because otherwise, moisture can lead to bacterial or fungal growth, causing conditions like jock itch, a common fungal infection in the groin region. If you do develop this, don't worry, as I've made a video elsewhere on the channel explaining everything you need to know about it, including symptoms and treatment.
The fifth tip is that if you have pubic hair, trimming it regularly can help maintain cleanliness by reducing sweat and debris buildup. I emphasize trimming rather than shaving because trimming shortens your pubic hair without cutting close to the skin, which can otherwise lead to injury or infection. For this, you can use scissors or a trimming tool marketed for use on pubic hair, or even tools made for trimming beards. Some popular ones include Manscaped, Braun, and Gillette trimmers. Again, a quick Google search will help you find one.
Tip six is to make sure you're wearing clean and comfortable underwear and change your underwear daily. Good choices of materials for boxers include pure cotton, which is a breathable material that helps prevent moisture buildup, thereby reducing the risk of infection.
Tip seven is to avoid tight clothing because it can increase sweating and restrict airflow, leading to moisture buildup and potential irritation. As mentioned earlier, it's best to opt for loose, breathable fabrics.
Tip eight is to practice safe sex. Use condoms to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and maintain genital health.
Tip nine is to check regularly for abnormalities. Regularly check for any signs of infection, such as unusual odors, discharge, sores, ulcers, or itching. Early detection can help in effective treatment. If you are worried about anything, consult your healthcare provider or visit your local sexual health clinic. I've included links in the description box of the video to help you find the nearest clinic if you live in the UK or USA.
My final tip is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps regulate body temperature and reduces sweating, which can keep the genital area cleaner and less prone to bacterial growth.
